What Is the Circle of Sorrow?

Also known as “Gravitas,” this poignant land memorial near Cayley, Alberta, takes the form of a 75‑metre‑wide compass rose. Each of the 12 points of the rose is shaped like an Avro Anson aircraft, arranged around an open grass circle—hence the name Circle of Sorrow.

Location: Rural prairie near Cayley, Alberta, along old Highway 2A.
Design: A compass-like arrangement of twelve Anson-shaped inlays made with gravel, grass, and actual aircraft remnants.
Meaning: Memorial to BCATP airmen, offering reflection on memory, sacrifice, and mortality; seen as both subtly integrated into the landscape and powerfully emotive when viewed from above .
